MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — The California Coastal Commission staff has agreed to allow U2’s guitarist to build a scaled-down compound in the mountains above Malibu .
The staff recommended Friday that the commission approve a smaller development than the one originally envisioned by David Evans , known better as “The Edge.”
Evans has been trying for eight years to build a five-mansion development that neighbors and environmentalists said would damage vegetation and create an eyesore on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean .
A spokeswoman for the Irish musician tells the Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/1BVTfBt ) that the new plans are dramatically different and the homes would be built into the contours of the hillside.
The full commission still must approve the 150-acre project and one senior staffer said there’s no guarantee that will happen.
