Cory Haley was 24 years old, a volunteer firefighter with the North Hopewell-Winterstown (PA) Fire Department, engaged to be married and training to join the Air Force as a pararescuer.  In the late afternoon hours of Christmas Eve, the Red Lion resident was jogging down along a road in Red Lion when he was struck by two vehicles and died in the hospital operating room.  Now, his fellow firefighters are raising money for the young man’s headstone.

“He wanted to do good and didn’t want to let anybody down, he didn’t let me down, at all,” Chief Shanan Poe told Fox 43 Central Pennsylvania. “Just an all-around good person. There’s a lot of people going to miss him, it’s a real tough loss.”

The New Year was full of big plans for this young firefighter, including a wedding in February and becoming an Air Force Pararescuer in March.  Now, his fellow firefighters want to make sure that no one forgets this three year firefighter who was always coming forward to help others.

When Cory’s family asked for help with donations for his memorial service, the fire department decided to get involved.  It is their hope that his headstone will reflect exactly who Cory Haley was and will show just how dedicated he was to everything he did.

“When somebody reads it, they’ll actually know,” Poe told the York Dispatch.  The fire department took to their Facebook page, North Hopewell-Winterstown Volunteer Fire Company, to announce their intentions to raise funds for Cory’s headstone on December 28 and the donations have been coming in since.

“We are calling out for help from anyone touched by Cory Haley! The family wants to get Cory a headstone so people will look at it and know that he was put to rest there and always be remembered. This family has suffered and lost an amazing young man……Let’s get this phenomenal young man the headstone he deserves.”

The fire department has collected hundreds of dollars in cash donations with pledges from local businesses and organizations.  If you would like to donate to the Cory Haley fund, you can mail or drop off your donation at the North Hopewell-Winterstown Volunteer Fire Company station at 12246 Winterstown Road, Felton, Pa.  17322.
